Bittersweet Farewell: Mason Greenwood’s Future Uncertain as Getafe Honors Man Utd Star with New Song
MASON GREENWOOD released a 52-word statement on his future as Getafe fans begged him to stay with a new chant.
The 22-year-old Manchester United forward has spent the season on loan with the Spanish club.
Mason Greenwood released a statement on his future after Getafe’s final league game
Fans chanted Greenwood’s name after Getafe’s final day 2-1 home defeat against Mallorca
And he played the entire 90 minutes as Getafe ended their LaLiga season with a 2-1 home defeat to Mallorca.
Greenwood’s future remains unclear as he enters the final year of his United contract.
But the forward sent a message to fans as he posted a statement on social media.
It read: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season.
“Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my teammates and club.
“A bitter sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”
Meanwhile, fans came up with a new chant for Greenwood on what could be his final appearance for Getafe.
They yelled “Mason, stay” at the end of the Mallorca game during Getafe’s lap of honour.
Greenwood acknowledged their chants with a thumbs-up.
Several fans in the stands were spotted in his No 12 shirt and tried to get his attention before he went down the tunnel.
The president of Getafe, Angel Torres, has also reiterated his desire to keep the United loanee beyond this campaign.
But despite their pleas for him to remain in Spain, Greenwood’s football career is up in the air.
He ended the season with 36 appearances and ten goals in all competitions for Getafe.
President of Getafe Torres has expressed a strong desire to bind Greenwood once more. However, he stated: “We still rely on Manchester United; nothing has changed.” I doubt there will be any immediate updates.
After playing 90 minutes, Greenwood’s possible farewell was ruined by an injury sustained when Getafe goalkeeper David Soria collided with Cyle Larin of Mallorca.
After requiring extensive medical attention and requiring an ambulance to enter the field, Soria eventually left the field without being replaced.
Before Gaston Alvarez gave his team the lead on minute 48, Greenwood had opportunities.
But they were hit by two last-gasp goals from Vedat Muriqi then Pablo Maffeo.
After picking up Getafe’s Player of the Month in April, Greenwood said: “It’s been an amazing experience. I’m glad that I’ve played for Getafe. It’s a very good league.”
New United shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe said in February: “It’s quite clear we have to make a decision.”
