Elephants are truly remarkable animals with their high intelligence, great memory, and ability to feel emotions just like us humans. Katherine Connor is the visionary behind BLES (Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary), a safe haven for retired and rescued elephants where they can finally live free from the hardships they endured for so long. Among the elephants cared for at BLES was Boon Thong, an elderly elephant who enjoyed some wonderful moments in her twilight years before peacefully passing away.
This time, there were no other dogs for companionship, but Pancake found solace in the love and care of the humans around her. Originally a stray in Thailand, Pancake now holds a special place in the heart of everyone at Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary.
Although Pancake and Boon Thong may have seemed like an odd pair at first, they actually meshed together seamlessly within the elephant sanctuary community. Their bond grew strong as they formed a close friendship while living among the elephants.
Pancake made the decision to stay by Boon Thong’s side until the very end, never once leaving her alone. They spent hours reminiscing about their shared memories, from the day they first met. Their bond was so strong that they stayed with her for nine hours straight, showing a deep love and compassion that surpassed anything material. Pancake knew that her presence was important for offering comfort, so she stayed quietly by Boon Thong’s side until the sun set and she took her final breath.
The sanctuary held a heartfelt ceremony to honor Boon Thong, laying her to rest alongside her companions. Surrounded by fruits and flowers, they bid her farewell with well wishes. It’s truly touching to see Elephants mourn the loss of a loved one. They are such remarkable, compassionate creatures, and I can imagine Boon Thong felt the love and respect in her final moments.
